Wisconsin DNR Deer Population Study

From the Wisconsin DNR
Populations determine structure.

“Every year, following the close of hunting, biologists and population ecologists enter data from the hundreds of thousands of registration stubs collected at deer registration stations as a first step in determining future season rules,” said Keith Warnke, Department of Natural Resources deer and bear ecologist

“Registrations provide a massive amount of hunter-supplied data that are a key input to our population estimations, which in turn are the basis of the next year’s hunting season structure. Hunters can get a general idea of population trends in their unit from this map and areas that are below or close to goals. Depending on where you hunt, scouting, teaming up for drives and having a plan B will improve chances of success. As deer numbers approach healthy population goals, fewer deer may be seen in some DMUs compared to when populations were out of balance,” Warnke said.

New restrictions in place on movement of deer carcasses from CWD zone

MADISON – New rules governing the transport of hunter-harvested and vehicle-killed deer from the chronic wasting disease – management zone (CWD-MZ) of southern Wisconsin take effect on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2009.
The new rules [PDF 220KB] aim to “prevent the tissues most likely to contain CWD from being brought to areas of the state where CWD does not occur and introducing the disease there,” said Davin Lopez, CWD project leader for the Department of Natural Resources. The rules were approved last year by the state Natural Resources Board, DNR’s seven citizen-member policy making body.

Shoreland Rules in Wisconsin

Here's a great article explaining Wisconsin's Lakefront and Shoreland Zoning.

Wisconsin Shoreland Zoning Rules

With over 15,000 inland lakes, 50,000 miles of rivers and streams, and 1000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, water plays a key role in shaping the physical and cultural identity of Wisconsin. Boasting of quiet trout streams, wild rivers and streams, and inland lakes and wetlands created by ice-age glaciers, Wisconsin is blessed with a tremendous number and variety of water resources. Providing a necessary source of food and transportation, these water resources played a key role in the settlement of Wisconsin by Native American tribes and early settlers. Today, our water resources continue to play a vital role to local economies, natural habitats, and recreational activities.

Private Property Rights

"Property" is more than just the physical thing—the land, the bricks, the mortar—it is also the sum of all the rights and powers incident to ownership of the physical thing. It is the tangible and the intangible. Property is composed of constituent elements and of these elements the right to use the physical thing to the exclusion of others is the most essential and beneficial. Without this right all other elements would be of little value.' " -- Dickman v. Commissioner, 465 U.S. 330, 336 (1984).
